Fourth Wall
Some canons that have been specifically referenced or named by Sam have been: Batman, Superman, Aquaman, Hunger Games, Game of Thrones, Portal 2, and a bunch more that I'll come back to list later. My default approach is to make up a rip-off version for him to know instead, like Wonder Gal instead of Wonder Woman. If you'd like him to recognize your character, let me know. Otherwise, you'll just really, really remind him of this one thing he's read.

He just recently lost someone close to him in canon. It'll take quite some time to build up to liking someone else again. He's ok with hugging, but holding hands or anything else might be too much.
